Yet another honour killing surfaces in UP

In yet another case of honour killing, a boy, who had eloped with a girl from outside caste, was allegedly killed by the family members of the girl .

The brutal killing has taken place in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, about 400 km from here and the place has been infamous for a large number of honour killings. The mutilated body of the boy identified as Ajit Saini was recovered by the police on Friday from the jungles near Mandi area.

“The girl has also gone missing. And, it is suspected that she too may have beenkilled by her family members. A hunt has been launched to trace her body,” sources said.

According to police sources here, Ajit Saini, a management student, had an affair with his classmate Anshu Tomar. As their families were averse to this relationship, the lovers had eloped from their homes about two months back. The couple, however, returned home a few days back after a deceitful assurance from the girl’s family that their marriage would be solemnised as per religious traditions, sources said.

The police have arrested the father and the brother of the girl and are looking for two more people. The brother, during interrogation, reportedly admitted to having killed Ajit “for the sake of family honour”. “The boy belonged to a different community and so their relation was not acceptable to us,” he told the police.

In the Jat dominated western Uttar Pradesh “honour killings’ for marrying against the wishes of the family are quite common. It was only recently that two teenaged lovers were brutally killed in full public view in Farrukhabad district after they were caught together in a house in the village. The all powerful caste panchayats have made it clear that they will not allow love marriages.
