Investigation into the corruption case has barely begun, says probe agency

A CBI source told Deccan Herald that the air hostess, Anu Puri, who is in her 50s, has been charged with possessing wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income.

Puri, according to sources, also owned some bank lockers which are being searched by CBI sleuths who suspect these might yield more information on her wealth.

Asked whether the lady belonged to an affluent family, the CBI source said “it does not seem so.”

While the investigating agency has been able to trace documents that show Puri having an income of Rs Rs 3,62,74,778 during 1982 to February 28, 2010, sleuths who raided at her residence here seized Rs 7.25 lakh in cash. On the possibility of the national carrier being "used" by the accused, the CBI said "all possibilities will be looked into. The investigation has barely begun."

Sources said “an FIR was registered after the CBI received a source-based information about Puri owning assets much more than her know sources of earnings". Puri, sources said, is single.

The CBI alleged that Puri, a deputy-manager level officer, acquired the immovable assets -- two properties in Green Park, New Delhi, two more at Safdarjung Enclave, and another at Anand Niketan—besides a flat in Safdarjung Enclave in the name of her father who passed away some time back. The total value of immovable and movable assets in her name is estimated to be Rs 4,11,96,830.

After taking into account the income earned by her from known sources and the total expenses incurred during the check period, the total disproportionate amount is estimated to be Rs. 3,62,74,778.

According to sources, the CBI will prepare a list of discovered assets, including precious metals, by Tuesday, before taking any decision to arrest Puri.
