After hiking the quantum of rice allocation to the State and getting Parliament to pass the legislation to revive the Legislative Council in Tamil Nadu, the Centre has now acceded to yet another demand from the DMK to permit Parvathy Ammal to come over here for treatment after she was asked to return to Malaysia soon after her arrival in Chennai on April 16.

“The Government of India on May 7 wrote to the Indian Mission in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, with a copy marked to us, that Mrs Parvathy Ammal may be allowed to come to Tamil Nadu for medical treatment on humanitarian grounds under certain conditions,” Chief Minister M Karunanidhi announced in the Assembly on Monday.

Recently, Tamil Nadu had written to the Centre to consider the possibility of permitting the ailing mother of the slain LTTE leader, after Parvathy Ammal had sent an email request seeking re-entry into the State for medical purposes. During his visit to Delhi early this month, Karunanidhi himself took up the issue with Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P Chidambaram.
Though the decision to grant visa for Parvathy would have normally taken longer considering that her son was heading LTTE which was responsible for the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi,  the DMK had turned pro-active after several pro-Tamil groups denounced it for the instant deportation of Parvathy.

Karunanidhi, who made a suo motu statement on this issue in the House, said the Centre’s order to the Indian Mission in Malaysia stating that a “six months visa” could be granted to Parvathy was possible in such short time partly as a result of the DMK’s persistent efforts to convince the Centre.Stating that this permission had been given without any prejudice to the PIL pending in the Madras HC on this issue, Karunanidhi said the conditions under which Parvathy Ammal was being allowed should solely be for medical purposes.
