The accused ward boy Ranvir Singh was today arrested and an attempt to rape case registered against him, DIG, Kanpur, Hariram Sharma said.
The 22-year-old French national Heather Bates along with her British friend James Hawkins was going to Patna in a train when they both fell ill after consuming some food in the train.
They were then taken to the railway hospital in Kanpur from where they were shifted to the state-run Halet Hospital here on Saturday.
Bates, who was admitted to the ICU of the hospital, last evening complained to doctors that a ward boy tried to rape her. The doctors then informed the police about the incident, Sharma said.
According to police sources, the hospital authorities initially tried to suppress the incident and only after Bates threatened to report the matter to the French embassy that the authorities swung into action.
Doctors said the condition of the two was now better and they would be soon discharged from the hospital.
The two foreigners had come on a tour of India.
