State to plant 13 lakh saplings on highways

Disclosing this to reporters here, Ashisara who met environmentalists and officials of Forest, PWD and other departments under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said, “The State has National Highways, State Highways and district roads totalling about 63,000 km. A proposal has been chalked out to implement afforestation plan at a cost of Rs five crore. Awareness programmes about the importance of maintaining green cover and forest, rallies and conventions of forest dwellers all along the Western Ghats would also be organised.”

Expressing concern over extraction of a distinctive medicinal plant being grown only in the thick forest range in Agumbe in the Western Ghats in Shimoga district, the chairman of the task force said the spice locally called as 'Kadu Arishina Balli' reportedly proved to be potent in the treatment of cancer, diabetics and other diseases.

“The Central government has already included the spice under the banned list of exports.However,  it is not properly enforced,’ he added.
