Maya slams UPA for ignoring Naxal areas

“The UPA government has not taken any action to provide basic facilities in the Naxal-affected regions and therefore, the people of the area feel neglected and join the Naxals,” Mayawati said.

Stating that the Naxal problem was not a law and order one, the chief minister said that her government had successfully tackled the problem in the districts of Sonebhadra, Mirzapur and Chandauli by undertaking a number of social and economic initiatives. For this, she had not received any assistance from the Centre, she claimed.

Mayawati said she had asked the Centre for releasing funds for backward regions of eastern UP and Bundelkhand, which could be the next target of Left-wing extremism. However, “despite several letters to the Centre, it has not done anything,” she alleged.
According to Mayawati, the Congress was to be blamed for the problem, as despite being in power for 50 years, it did nothing for the welfare of the poor and the backward.
