6 die in TN rain havoc

Even as the cyclonic storm ‘Laila’over the Southwest and adjoining West-Central Bay of Bengal intensified throwing up very rough tall waves in several coastal stretches, a fisherman was dragged by one such wave in Ramanathapuram district; electrocution claimed at least two more lives elsewhere in the state.

In Chennai, battered by a heavy downpour since the wee hours of Wednesday, a 24-year-old woman techie, Tejawathi, met with a tragic death in the southern suburb of Vellachery as she stepped on a live wire that snapped in heavy winds. Tejawathi, a software engineer hailed from Andhra Pradesh, police said.

Large parts of arterial roads in the city were under knee-deep water with Chennai recording a maximum of 8 cm of rainfall.

Power supply and transportation in different parts of the state were badly hit.
While widespread rains pounded the Cauvery delta districts including Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Tiruchirappalli, a Jet Airways flight with 70 passengers on board from Madurai to Chennai last night survived intense wind turbulence while flying over Cuddalore district, sources said.
