The function is being organised to commemorate the 2,500th year of Lord Buddha’s enlightenment.  As a consequence, a sapling from the “original” Mahabodhi banyan tree at Anuradhapuram in Sri Lanka is being brought to India for being planted at Patna’s Buddha Park.

“Delegations from Sri Lanka, Burma, Japan and Thailand will attend the prayer ceremony during the inaugural function of the park, which will be presided over by Dalai Lama,” a senior official, overseeing the arrangements, told Deccan Herald on Saturday.

The visiting foreign delegations will bring with them Buddha relics and gifts . Sources said the Dalai Lama, who is now in US would return to India on May 26 morning.
