An evening of music and lyrics

The event was held to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Tagore.

It was a breath-taking fusion of Tagore’s musical and poetic excellence. After tea and snacks, the audience settled down to listen to the famous poems. With several posters of Rabindranath Tagore splashed all over the stage, almost everyone was transported into a totally different world. The evening kickstarted with the host saluting Tagore as he said, “We salute you as we sing your songs today.” Followed by which Jayati Chakraborty presented Pitamahasi Pitanovodhi.

The main intention of the event, apart from the 150th birth anniversary celebrations, was to spread the message and music of Rabindranath Tagore outside Bengal and to today’s youth. Karishma Bose, who came to listen to Rabindra Sangeet, says “I have been in Bangalore for about four decades now. Anything related to Rabindranath Tagore happens anywhere in Bangalore, I make it a point to attend it. Such is my love for him and his works. His works have gone places and have struck a chord amongst many people, I am one of those who is inspired by his works.”

Though majority of the audience were Bengalees, there were others too who simply loved the poems composed by Tagore. Abdullah Khan, a retired Physics professor, says, “As a child, my uncle used to read his works to me and my brothers. That is how I was exposed to his works and I must say that I am deeply inspired by his thoughts and his presentation style. It is marvellous to think the way he thought. I have also heard that Manomoy Bhattacharya and Jayati Chakraborty are very good at singing Rabindranath Tagore’s poems. So I don’t want to miss this opportunity and I enjoyed the evening.”
