The news must have shocked Amar Singh, SP leaders feel, though he told newspersons that Jaya Bachchan was free to choose her own political path.

Bachchan’s current term in the RS will end on July 4, along with six others.  A statement on the renomination of Bachchan and former Union Minister and SP Vice-president, Rashid Masood, for the RS seats was issued by State Party President, Akhilesh Yadav (Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son), here.

Bachchan’s nomination comes as a surprise amid speculations in the party circle that the party would not want her in the RS seat due to her proximity with Amar Singh. The speculations were also because Bachchan had termed Amar Singh's expulsion as ‘unfortunate’. Also, Mulayam Singh Yadav had recently refused to comment on Bachchan's renomination when asked about it, saying the party would take a decision at an appropriate time.

Another SP MP, Jaya Prada, was shown the door by the party for backing Amar Singh after he was expelled from the party in February this year.Bachchan, however, showed signs of distancing herself from Amar, when she did not participate in the ‘Kshatriya rally’ organised by him in March this year. She also reportedly did not heed to his calls to her to quit the party. Her renonimation puts to rest the speculations and deepens her stand-off with Amar.
