Elephant tramples man to death

The deceased was trying to chase the elephant which had entered the coffee estate. The deceased has been identified as coffee grower Manipanda Vittala (58) of Devanoor.

It was said that wild elephants had destroyed banana, jackfruit, coconut and other crops in the estate of Vittal situated near Nagarahole reserve forest.  When Vittal tried to chase the elephant, it trampled him to death.

Hunasur division ACF Prasannakumar, Thithimathi division RFO Monnappa and others visited the spot and paid a compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh to the family of the victim.  ACF said “as the bamboos have become dry in forest, wild elephants have started attacking estates in search of food. Efforts will be made to chase elephants back to forest. People should be cautious while walking.” ZP Member Ranjan Changappa was present.
