Last Updated 29 May 2010, 17:26 IST

The first tree under this project was planted at the Krishnarajapuram diesel shed, of the South Western Railway here.

Home Minister V S Acharya who launched the initiative said: “Over the next one year, we need to plant one crore plants across the State and seven crore plants over a period spanning five years.”

Voicing his concern over the depleting tree cover,  Kuldeep Chaturvedi, General Manager of South Western Railways, said, “Bangalore was once a green paradise but recent developments have led to the cutting down of innumerable trees. This joint initiative of the AOL is a small step to recapture the lost glory and the exhausted tree cover.”

Swami Vishnupada from AOL said, “It is estimated that a human being needs 20 trees for survival during his lifespan. So, we need to protect the green cover for our very survival. No other species pollutes our planet earth as man does.  A tree when, alive provides shade, fruits, oxygen etc. And, even when it is dead, it provides wood, fuel etc. ”
