Speaking at the ‘Jago Samsad Jago’ program organised by Consumer Forum, Udupi, here on Thursday, he pointed out the rumours surrounding the distribution of power generated by the plant and added that they are against the interest of the local people.
The districts coming under MESCOM—Dakshina Kannada, Chikmagalur, Udupi and Shimoga— should get a larger share. The residual power should be given to Central power grid and through the grid, the power can be distributed to other parts of the State. Nagarjuna power plant will generate about 600 mega watts of power in the first phase, of which 400 mega watts should be the share of undivided Dakshina Kannada district, he added.

People in this part have suffered a lot due to the thermal plant. Obviously they hold the rights to enjoy the benefits of it. The central production point of the power is stationed in this area and hence the coastal belt of the State should be the major consumer of the provision, he said.

The decisions taken in the meet held between KPTCL and ESCOM is favouring the priority for distribution of power based on demand. This is unethical, as it will give a larger share of the power generated to Bangalore, which is the share holder of 59 per cent of the power generated. Hubli and CESCOM get nearly 11 per cent and 10.5 per cent of the power respectively. Next is MESCOM with only 8.5 per cent share of the benefits, he explained.

A delegation comprising the people’s representatives of the area and members of Consumer Forum should make representation to Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to issue orders to KPTCL and ESCOM to take appropriate measures, he added.
Consumer Forum Convener Damodhar Aithal, Members Shanathraj Aithal, Rabindra Nayak and others were present.
DH News Service
