Two separate committees organised programmes in the city to celebrate the 60th birthday of University of Mysore Vice-Chancellor K S Rangappa, here, on Monday.

While a committee oversaw a national seminar titled ‘Making a Scientist: A Seminar on K S Rangappa’s Scientific Contributions’, another committee, Prof K S Rangappa Shashtyabhinandana Samithi managed the felicitation ceremony in the evening, which was attended by Hassan MP, former prime minister H D Deve Gowda.

Krishne Gowda, professor of the Institute of Development Studies at the varsity, who is a member of both the committees said, it was for the first time such a gesture has been extended to the vice-chancellor of the varsity.

“All of Rangappa’s well-wishers and collaborators have come together to organise the programmes to recognise his scientific contributions. Rangappa’s children also extended ‘support’ for the programme,” he said.

To a question, he said, the programme was not organised on behalf of the varsity. “That is why we have avoided using the logo of the varsity in any of the programmes,” he said.

During the inaugural, K J Rao, scientist, Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit, Indian Institute of Science, lauded the achievements of Rangappa. Addressing the gathering, he said, many students who pursue research in Chemistry do not know the ‘priority problems’. He said, several scientists waste time working on projects that do not yield any results. This is due to the circumstances under which they work.

Students and lecturers from PG Centers of the varsity in Mandya, Chamarajanagar and Hassan also participated in the programme.

Felicitation
In another programme, held in the evening, H D Deve Gowda felicitated Rangappa.
Speaking at the programme, he lauded the contribution of the Wadiyars for the development of the region and said that they were among the best administrators in the country. He said, the Wadiyars invested on developmental projects and made Karnataka a model State in the country.
Pramoda Devi Wadiyar and others were present.
