Poonia, Tintu steal limelight

Athletics: Mortaza, Maheswary disappoint

Krishna won her third straight gold with an effort of 59.94 metres while Tintu, who had missed the second leg in Bangalore due to illness, won the 800 metres, defeating Margarita Matsko of Kazakhstan, the winner at Pune and Bangalore.

Triple jumper Renjith Maheswary and one-lap runner S K Mortaza failed to make it three in a row, settling for silver medals in their respective events. Nelson Stone of Papua New Guinea won the 400M in 47.01 with Mortaza timing 47.29.

Renjith leapt to 16.60 metres to come second behind China’s Wu Bo, the bronze winner at Bangalore.Talented Tintu, a trainee of legendary P T Usha, built up a big lead at the end of the first lap and then seemed to be gasping for breath at the home turn. It was a struggle to the tape but the Indian managed to keep out her rivals, clocking 2:03.67. Matsko (2:04.42) and India’s Sushma Devi (2:04.42 secs) finished second and third respectively.
