Kodagu district gets Rs 10.82 cr for SSA project

While approval was given for the sanction of Rs 10.82 crore to implement Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) Scheme in Kodagu district for the academic year 2009-10, the Centre has blocked the release of Rs 1.44 crore since civil works related to school buildings were not completed in time.

The main objective of the SSA Scheme is to provide compulsory education to all children of 6-14 age group with the participation of society. Out of Rs 10.82 crore, the State government will release Rs 1.60 crore while Centre’s share will be Rs 9.22 crore. The State and Central governments will be releasing funds for the implementation of the Scheme in 85:15 ratio in the Ninth Finance Scheme, 75:25 ratio in Tenth Finance Scheme and in 50:50 ratio during the Eleventh Finance Scheme.

A total of Rs 3.08 will be spent to hire the services of graduates and for the salary of teachers during the implementation of Scheme. While Rs 33 lakh will be spent for resource persons, Rs 79 lakh will be reserved for furnitures, Cluster Resource Centre resource persons’ remuneration and allowances. Rs 8.6 lakh will be utilised to distribute free text books to students from standard 1 to 5 and 6 to 8 studying in aided schools. A total of Rs 1.26 has been reserved for the construction of classrooms and other civil works. Construction of toilets for girls will be undertaken at a cost of Rs 10 lakh.

While Rs 50 lakh will be spent for the maintenance of higher primary schools, Rs 41 lakh will utilised for the maintenance of primary and lower primary schools. Other programmes including computer education and education for rural girls will be taken up with at a cost of Rs 1 crore.

A sum of Rs 64.5 lakh has been earmarked for the enhancement of education quality and other related purposes. A total of 31,866 activities will be implemented in the district under the SSA Scheme using Rs 10.82 crore.
