Last Updated 13 June 2009, 17:09 IST

After clinching the title at the season-opening Krishna Khaitan tournament in Chennai, Sumeeth lost to eventual winner Sai Praneet in the semifinals in Kochi earlier this week. Sumeeth will face a stern test as the country’s top eight under-19 boys will be seen in action at the Karnataka Badminton Association courts during the Badminton Association of India’s third event of season.

The tournament, which has attracted around 500 players from 21 states, will have competitions in singles and doubles for boys and girls in the under-16 and under-19 categories. While Madhya Pradesh’s Pratul Joshi begins favourite in the boys’ under-16 category, Anuradha Shrikhande of Maharashtra and Sindhu PV of Andhra Pradesh have been given the top billing in the girls’ under-19 and under-16 sections respectively.

The qualifying rounds will be held on June 15 and 16. The main draw will commence on June 17, with all the finals scheduled for June 19.

The performances here will be considered when players are selected for the Junior Asian and World Championships, said former All England champion Prakash Padukone.
