candid Dharamendra

Dharamendra, joined the world of showbiz way back in the days of ‘black and white’ cinema but even today has the same enthusiasm that he had. “I still have that fire within me. When I was young I wanted to be admired and loved. It is still the same today,” he says. In an interview with Metrolife, he speaks about his new films and his love for the medium.

Even after five decades, he says, he still feels like a newcomer. “Today’s generation is so fast and they are conveying new things. I still feel like there is much to learn,” he says. He then moves to the medium of television. “I think a large part of the population gets an instant gratification through television serials now.”

Though he is not an avid soap watcher, he feels that the crowd gets their dose of emotion through television itself. He also speaks about his new movie Yamla Pagla Deewana, where he would be seen in a comic role after a long time. “It is a comedy about a father and son. And we have been been lucky to have got good lines,” he says.
“And I love to do comedies. If you have seen some of my movies like Chupke Chupke, Naukar Biwi Ka, you would know,” he says.

Another movie closer home in which he would be seen is Hema Malini’s production, Tell Me Oh Khuda. “I have a full-length role. It is about a daughter in search of her father,” he says. And how has it been working with Esha? “She is my daughter and I love her very much. It is an interesting movie, with an action packed climax,” he says.

“I can’t say much about it because Hema is planning to publicise it full-fledged,” he adds. Being a producer, he feels is something of a challenge in this respect. “No actor should become a producer I think. I lack the mathematical aspect of making a movie,” he says.
“I am an emotional man, not like a businessman. Like we have made the movie Yamla Pagla Deewana but I have no clue how to go on promoting it,” he informs. “I still have to learn the tricks of the trade,” he says laughing.

But he says that quite a few actors are doing it very successfully. “You need a special brain for that kind of work. Like Aamir made Ghajini...he is a very good producer,” he adds.

And who does he like among the current generation? “See I can’t answer such questions because all of them are like my children. But, they are all very good,” he says.
