Husband of Tina Ambani's niece arrested for dowry harassment

Businessman Arup Chatterjee(44) was apprehended at the airport here soon after he landed from Hong Kong on Monday evening following a complaint by his wife Mana(39), Deputy Police Commissioner(DCP) Anil Kumbhare said.

The victim, a resident of south Mumbai, is the daughter of one of Tina's six elder sisters, police said.

In her complaint Mana had alleged that Chatterjee, whose company manufactures spare parts for automobiles, had assaulted her many times for various reasons including money and the harassment had increased in the past few months.

The victim also alleged that Chatterjee had forced her to transfer Rs 28 lakh to his account, the DCP said.

"After the complaint was registered with Gamdevi Police Station, Chatterjee was arrested for dowry harassment and extortion," Kumbhare said.

The accused was remanded in police custody till July 12 after he was produced before a local court yesterday.

The accused was charged under various sections of IPC including 498A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 386 (Extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt).

The couples married in 1996 and have two school-going children.
