Punjab minister booked in suicide case

Harbans Singh, who was personal assistant to the minister, had reportedly committed suicide by jumping into Narwana branch canal, about 20 km from Ambala. His body was fished out from the canal on July 7.

The police had recovered a suicide note from his house in Pathan Majra village near Ambala in which Harbans Singh said he was committing suicide due to persistent harassment by a bank manager at Amloh in Punjab at the behest of the minister.

The Ambala Police has registered a case of abetment to suicide against the bank manager and the minister under section 306 of the India Penal Code.

Harbans Singh’s suicide note said that he was forced to take the extreme step as he could not bear the harassment. Singh was suspected to have jumped into the canal as his sleepers and bicycle were recovered near the bank. His body was recovered by divers three days after the incident.
