<p> Union Labour and Employment Minister Mallikarjun Kharge said here on Saturday the recruitment was to ensure that no patient coming to ESIC hospitals was deprived of treatment for want of doctors. The Centre would bear the salary of the doctors appointed on temporary basis. <br /><br />The Minister was speaking at the inauguration of newly-established Divisional Office of ESIC in the City.<br /><br />Kharge disclosed that it has been decided to upgrade four ESIC dispensaries in the State as well-equipped hospitals. <br /><br />The Medical Council of India has approved the post graduation medical centre to be set up by ESIC and it will have an intake of 10 students.<br /><br />Mining safety zonal office<br /><br />The Minister said a zonal office of mining safety will be opened in Bangalore and urged the State Government to permit it to come up in the corporate office premises of Kudremukh Iron Ore Steel Company in Bangalore. “The zonal office in Tamil Nadu has jurisdiction over Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Goa. In view of large-scale mining activities in Karnataka we have decided to set up a new zonal office in Bangalore which will have jurisdiction over Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Goa,” he said.<br />Labour Minister B N Bachegowda said Karnataka was planning to have its own autonomous Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) instead of depending on the one at the national-level. Karnataka will be first state in the country to have its own ESI Corporation.<br /><br />“The Corporation has to depend on the State Health Department for the recruitment of doctors, paramedical staff, etc. If we have our own ESIC we can effectively implement the schemes meant for working class,” Gowda said. He pointed out that there was a shortage of 158 doctors at ESIC health establishments.<br /><br />Lauding the Union Labour and Employment Minister Mallikarjun Kharge for enhancing the salary limit from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 for availing the ESIC benefit, Gowda said the measure has resulted in extending the ESI coverage to 20 lakh employees from the earlier 15 lakh. <br /><br />The State has been contributing Rs 350 crore to the Corporation per year and is eligible to avail benefits up to Rs 169 crore. <br /><br />However, Karnataka has been betting benefits worth Rs 90 crore only, he revealed. Gowda urged Kharge to bring plantation workers under ESI so that the benefit could be extended to Chikmagalur and Kodagu districts. <br /><br />He also wanted the Centre to include Bidar in the ESI coverage. The newly-established Divisional Office in Gulbarga will cover Bidar, Gulbarga, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Bellary, Bijapur and Bagalkot districts.</p>
