Police chief praises World Cup security

Last Updated 11 July 2010, 12:02 IST

"If it was not for the South African security services, we would not have gone this far," Cele said Sunday in Johannesburg.

Chele said the standards set during the World Cup would now have to be maintained.
"Make sure that when the visitors are gone, South Africans are safe. You need to maintain the squeeze on criminals' space and finish their oxygen," he emphasised.

Concerns had been raised before the tournament about the safety of fans travelling to South Africa for the World Cup but the feared wave of violent crime never materialised.
"I am not happy, I am flying. Happy is an understatement," said Chele.
