Speaking on one phone and texting on the other is quite a common sight these days with many youngsters operating more than one connection. Though it may seem difficult, it’s no big deal for the generation today.

Pooja A, an engineering student at BMS College of Engineering, uses two handsets, one for texting and the other for calling.

“You can’t get all the desired packages in one connection. If the call rate is less, then messages won’t be free and vice-versa. So in order to get all these features, it is better to purchase two sim cards,” she informs.

And handling these phones is not a problem for her. “I carry both sets most of the time. I keep one phone in my bag and the other in my pocket. If I am going for a function or any other event, I carry only one,” she says.

“My mom doesn’t want me to keep two handsets and she always wonders which number to call on,” beams Pooja. Another engineering student, Pallavi too, has two handsets with two sim cards. She has 150 messages free in each sim and interestingly, she finishes almost all the free messages by forwarding them to her friends everyday.

“Mobile phone is a part and parcel of my life and I never find any difficulty handling it. But my parents are a bit hesitant. They always warn me not to lose my phones and be careful while travelling,” she says.

Pallavi says most of her communication happens through text messaging itself and that she hardly makes calls. “I think messaging is the coolest way to be in touch with friends. So there is no need to recharge the phones often,” she opines.

Though Santosh, a young professional, has only one handset, he has three sim cards of different connections. “Whenever there is a luring offer from any network, I purchase a sim card of that particular network. Some of my friends live in other states and countries. So one of my sim cards, which has low STD and ISD call rates, is meant for them. I use a post-paid connection for official use. And I have been using a connection, which has a free messaging offer, for the past six years. I put that sim card at nights and chat with my buddies for hours,” he explains.

“Though I don’t have any problem managing multiple sim cards, my parents get confused sometimes. My father, who is not good at handling mobiles, finds it difficult to save my new number on his cell every time,” he beams.

The craze for dual sim handsets is increasing nowadays as well. Gourav, a student who has a dual sim handset, says they are quite common among his friends.

“The prices of mobile handsets have considerably decreased these days and dual sim handsets are affordable. I have 100 messages free for each sim card and with GPRS facility, I use the Internet occasionally,” he says.
