Gandhiji's Note

Last Updated 22 July 2010, 10:47 IST

Dear friend,

I am a deeply anguished man today due to the prevailing communal situation. I always  worked for communal harmony. But now, I see growing intolerance, mutual distrust and discord. There is fear, suspicion and hatred. The monster of communalism is rearing its ugly head with many faces. Unscrupulous politicians are adding fuel to the fire. The present situation, if allowed to continue, poses a grave danger to India’s unity and integrity; Memories of the bloodshed before and after the country’s partition on religious basis can never, be erased. I cannot be a silent spectator to the happenings now.

I propose to land a movement to liberate the people from communal distrust and hatred.
Ours is a country of rich diversity. We shall preserve it at all costs. People of all faiths should live in happiness and harmony in the Bharat of my dream.

Ananya Raghavendra, standard VII, Bishop Cotton Girls School, won the third prize at the national level ‘’Gandhiji Writes a Postcard Competition” conducted by the Department of Posts. Ananya’s prize winning letter is given above.
