Gurjit Kaur was electrocuted by her parents, who opposed her relationship with Gagandeep Singh, in village Kainth near Dasuya, DSP Inderjit Verma said. Later, the parents set ablaze the car of her daughter's lover near village Kamalpur on Begowal–Nadala road.

Gagandeep received serious burn injuries and was battling for life in a hospital in Jalandhar, the DSP said. He said the youth told the police that Gurjit's parents mercilessly thrashed him, locked him in his car, poured petrol on the vehicle and set it on fire.

Gagandeep, however, managed to come out of the burning car and was attacked again with sharp-edged weapons, the DSP said. The boy told the police that the girl whom he was in love and wanted to marry invited him to her house saying her parents had gone out of the village.

They, however, returned home and thrashed Gagandeep, a resident of village Mari Samra near Bhikwind in Amritsar district, the DSP said. They forcibly took him to Kamalpur village and tried to burn him alive, the police officer said.

The police later raided the house of the girl and found her dead. She was allegedly electrocuted by her father Sher Singh, a farmer, and her mother, the DSP said adding both had been arrested. A case of attempt to murder would also be registered against them for tyring to kill Gagandeep.
