The police suspect that the murder was for gain. About Rs 78,000 cash and mangalsutra and a gold earring are said to be missing. Roopa's body was found in the kitchen by her shop-owner husband when he came home. He alerted the neighbours and the police. Police suspect the involvement of some persons known to the family who knew Roopa would be alone at home. A banner cloth was used to strangle the victim.

The body bore no marks of struggle, and police suspect the assailant surprised Roopa. Her in-laws had gone to their home town and her husband was at the shop. The assailant entered the house when Roopa was packing lunch for her husband. Half filled Tiffin carrier and rice and sambar vessels lid were also thrown open.
