Green Kids don't eat and drink in Styrofoam!

Last Updated 29 July 2010, 11:02 IST

Says Karen Leason, age 10: ‘’We have to stop buying things that we can only use once and then throw away.” Think firmly about this, the next time you go shopping.

1. Stamp out Styrofoam. It is a kind of plastic which is permanent garbage. It is a danger to sea animals. Sea turtles sometimes eat Styrofoam and because it makes them float, they can’t dive again. It clogs their systems, and then they starve to death.

2. If you eat at fast food restaurants ask for paper cups and plates. Explain to them why they should not use Styrofoam. It hurts the earth.

3. Try to avoid Styrofoam products like picnic plates, cups, and even egg cartons.

4. On your next holiday make a compost heap for your mother’s gardening. The simplest way is to make a pile of leaves and grass clippings in a corner of your yard. In a while, the pile will turn into soil. Gift it to your mother for her gardening.
You can also put in vegetable and fruit skins in your compost pile.

5. We are using too many paper towels every year, millions of them. That is like killing a lot of trees! Our fathers and uncles and brothers use disposable lighters every year. Try to make them stop using them.

6. Keep a cloth towel by the sink. Next time you rinse your hands or wipe some spill, grab the cloth towel and use it instead of paper towels. Stop buying them, stop even looking at them at the mall when you go shopping. Using paper towels is like gently killing the trees you love!

7. Hold up a roll of paper towels in your home and imagine it’s a tree! See aluminium foil as a precious metal from underground!

8. Remember aluminium foil is reusable. Wash it off, let it dry, and put it away.

9. Take a reusable food container, steel or aluminium for your lunch. Don’t wrap your food in plastic wrap.

10.Remember that in one year, a leaky toilet can waste over 22,000 gallons of water. That’s enough to take three baths every day!

Take the top off the toilet tank in your bathroom. Then put 12 drops of red or blue food colouring in the tank. Wait for 15 minutes.

Now look in the toilet. If coloured water shows up in the bowl, you have found a leak! Tell your dad to repair it and save water! Become a Leak Detective!
