A day of reckoning for Congress on a minefield

Last Updated 09 August 2010, 03:39 IST

But, Congress leaders who led the rally will not stop at that. They are all charged up to hit out at the Yeddyurappa government on the ground that it has failed to meet the aspirations of the people and therefore it has no right to continue in power. It has aptly chosen the Quit India Day to drive home the message to the BJP that the Congress is a force to reckon with.

The Congress, probably, would not have bothered to make a show off its strength in Bellary, which was its strong hold about a decade ago. The party leaders and their supporters are in Bellary, thanks to the challenge thrown by the Reddy ministerial brothers and their associates on the floor of the Legislative Assembly, daring them to enter their home turf. The Congress in general and Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah in particular have made best use of the challenge to revive the party and to keep in touch with the party workers all along 330 km from Bangalore to Bellary.

The leadership not only entered the mining mecca, but also held a Congress legislature party meeting late on Sunday evening.
