National player moves HC for not figuring in CWG team

The Association, on the other hand, pleaded that Mayur had not been selected because his performance level has gone down in the recent years.

The petitioner contended that he had not been selected in the Core Group of 32 players although he had fulfilled the criteria of figuring in the first eight players during the National Championship held in Udaipur in February this year.

Mayur contended he came third in the weightlifting category in the National Championship at Udaipur and yet he was not selected in the Commonwealth Games Core Group team by the Indian Weightlifting Association.

Mayur further submitted he was number five in the international ranking. He argued that the criteria for selection in the Commonwealth Games team was that the player should figure in the 32 member Core Group. The Association had also decided to include in the Core Group the first eight winners of the National Championship held this year.

So far, only 17 players had been selected in the Core Group and the remaining slots were vacant. Hence his name should have been included in the Core Group, Mayur pleaded.

The Indian Weightlifting Association, however, pleaded that the performance level of Mayur had gone down.

Citing an example, the Association said, in 2005 National Games held in Yamuna Nagar, Mayur lifted 246 kg but in Udaipur National Games he was able to lift only 234 kg.

When the petition came up for hearing last week, the High Court asked the petitioner to include Steering Committee and Selection Committee of the Commonwealth Games 2010 as respondents in this matter.

The Court felt that the country should be represented by competent and qualified players.

Mayur was having National and International ranking and yet he had not been selected. The respondents should give reason for not selecting him, Justices D D Sinha and Mridula Bhatkar said.

The matter would come up for hearing tomorrow.
