Evaluation to go digital at VTU soon

Answer scripts to be compared with solutions fed into computers

The project would be of immense benefit to both students and faculty. It proposes to ease the work load on the teaching faculty as scheme of evaluation would be made available at their finger tips.

Instead of manually evaluating answer sheets, the evaluators could compare answers of the candidates with the solutions already fed into the computer. They would be able to access the scanned copies of answer sheets.

Even answer scripts of students can be mailed respective candidates in seconds. Long days of anxious waiting for students to access answer sheets would be a thing of the past.

"We are testing the accuracy of the new mode of evaluation. If desired results are achieved during the first phase of testing, this method will be introduced for MBA, MCA and  B Tech. courses,"  VTU Vice Chancellor Maheshappa told Deccan Herald.

Immense benefit

Digital evaluation would immensely benefit students as well as the teachers who are often under pressure to evaluate thousands of scripts manually.

Maheshappa said thousands of students apply for revaluation and it is a difficult task to preserve and search answer scripts. Teachers too have to evaluate multiple times. Computerisation of the process will redress all these problems.

According to the statistics available on the University’s official website, Visvesvaraya Technological Unit has 144 affiliated colleges offering under graduate courses in 27 disciplines and PG programme in 66 disciplines.

The intake at Under Graduate level is about 45,000 students and it is 7,500 for PG courses.

New software

Close to 1,500 answer scripts of doctorate students have been evaluated using the new software during the initial phase. The score card of their four core subjects is used as a yard stick for granting sanction to their research work. The project has been outsourced to a private company whose details are yet to be disclosed.

According to the officials, the preliminary results are quite satisfactory and the details would be officially announced after successful completion of the pilot.
