MGNREGS lags behind in Kodagu district

Out of ` 554.49 lakh, works worth only ` 14 lakh implemented

While Madikeri taluk has Rs 125.41 lakh available, only one work was implemented in the district spending just Rs 21,000. Somwarpet taluk had Rs 189.49 lakh available but 12 works at a cost of Rs 9.82 lakh have been implemented. In Virajpet, three works of Rs 1.07 lakh has been taken up as against available funds of Rs 158.55 lakh.

A source from the Zilla Panchayat informed that as the elected representatives have agreed themselves that Rs 13 crore could be spent last year only because the rules were relaxed, most of the money was spent on digging borewells and development of lakes keeping in mind the Gram Panchayat elections.

The source added that the amount was spent lavishly by the GPs as there was nobody in place to monitor how the funds are being utilised. “The elected representatives pressurised the Taluk Panchayat Executive Officers to release the fund to the GPs due to which Rs 13 crores were spent easily. This year with the election of new members, Government
appointed Panchayat Development Officers too. The appointment of PDOs has clipped the rights of GP Presidents and Secretaries who were calling shots so far,” the source added.

ZP CEO visited Kakkabe GP soon after taking charge and inspected the NREGS works there. On spotting dereliction of duty, he suspended the GP Secretary and Engineer. This move of the CEO has caused fear among the GP level officials. The GP level officials are no sceptical over relaxation of rules.

One more reason for slow pace progress of the project is because of agricultural activities which has caught up in the region. However, the ZP officials say that the works will start off again after the farming season gets over.  So far 43,911 families have enrolled  under the Scheme and 43,429 families have received the job cards. As many as 11,140 works are intended to be taken up in 98 GPs. Of this 10,790 works have been approved.
