1,350 IPS officers posts lying vacant

Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken said this shortage was having a bearing on filling up of senior policing positions in the states and the Centre.

"The Union Government is envisaging a limited competitive examination with a view to annually recruit 70 officers for a period of seven years from amongst officers of the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, Assistant Commandant and Captain or Major with a minimum of five years' experience," he said, adding the annual intake of IPS officers has also been raised to 150.

Maken said improvement of training facilities for police personnel at all levels was an ongoing process and mandatory mid-career training programmes have been introduced to enhance the policing skills and techniques of IPS officers.

"Government of India has schemes to strengthen and upgrade and training institutions, inter-alia, by providing requisite manpower, infrastructure and equipment," he said.
