2,852 BPL families get electricity connection in Kodagu district

Rajiv Gandhi Rural electrification project is proceeding in a snails pace

The project was envisaged to supply electrcity to the BPL families in the remote villages.
In the first phase of the project, Rajiv Gandhi Electrification Corporation had given its nod for the works worth Rs 38 crore.

However, now the Chamundeswari Electricity Supply Company has sent a revised proposal of Rs 53.29 crore to the Corporation for approval.

Of the 293 villages, 40 villages have seen 100 per cent success in the project. Electricity connections have been given to 2,852 BPL families in the district so far.

In July 2010, electricity connections have been given to 249 BPL beneficiaries. This include Nittur—91, Karmadu—43, Kavadi—18, Ammathi—2, Bilugunda—50, Badaga-Banangala—45. The works in Somwarper and Madikeri taluks are under progress, said officials.

The Chamundeswari Electricity Supply Company had contracted the work to Deepak Cables in Kodagu and Hassan districts. However, owing to the shortage of labourers, the work could not be undertaken says Chescom officials.

If the Centre gives its nod for the revised Rs 53.29 crore project, then 16,620 BPL families will be benefited in the district. The confusion over ration cards have not yet solved in the district. With the revised list of BPL families, additional families will be added into the beneficiary list.

Kodagu is a hilly region. Hence, in some places, Chescom had to spend in lakhs to supply electricity to one beneficiary.

Sources in Chescom say that on the recommendations of the previous Energy Minister Revanna, the contractors had given electricity connection to the beneficieries in urban areas by flouting the rules and regulations. In this background, the Corporation had denied to approve the lists of beneficiaries from urban areas.

In the meantime, CHESCOM Executive Engineer had assured the KDP meeting that the work will be fastened after the monsoon.
