Addressing a news conference on Wednesday, Commissioner of Police Seemanth Kumar Singh said that Rehmat, a resident of Ullal gave birth to a baby girl on June 26, 2010. Two days after the birth of the baby, Rehmat’s husband Shameer took the baby and went off, when Rehmat was preparing to leave the hospital after being discharged. He allegedly gave the baby to one Badruddin who along with one K K Abdul sold the baby to a childless couple from Kasargod.

Acting on a tip off, the police arrested Shameer, Badruddin and a middleman and recovered Rs 49,500 from them.

Police are on the look out for Abdul. Singh said that the police are now trying to find out if the culprits had cracked such deals in the past.

They are also looking at the reason behind the couple buying the child.

Singh told that the child has been sold by Shameer without the consent of his wife. “It is said that Rehmat was thrown out of the house by Shameer when she protested against the sale of the baby,” the Commissioner said adding that Rehmat had written a letter to him stating that she had to stay in a relative’s house as her parents too turned away from her.
