Government to give details on prisoners

Governor had sought reasons for releasing 593 convicts

Speaking to reporters after holding a meeting with the Advocate General Ashok Haranalli and other officials, Prisons Minister Umesh Katti said all the documents, judgment copies and clarifications sought by the Governor will be furnished to him.

The Governor had returned to the State Government a file sent to him by the Department of Prisons requesting for issue of orders for the early release of 593 life convicts. In a four-page communication to Chief Minister Yeddyurappa, the Governor had stated that the government had not explained as to why the prisoners have to be released. 

To meet Governor

Katti said a delegation led by Home Minister V S Acharya and Law Minister Suresh Kumar will also call on the Governor soon after submitting the documents sought. The Governor in his note had stated that a decision on release of prisoners need to taken on case to case basis based on merit.

He had also requested the government to send all such proposals containing full facts and particulars with proper recommendation case by case to be dealt with by him under Article 161 of the Constitution.

High security prison

Katti said the State Government is in the process of acquiring 22 acre of land adjacent to Parappana Agrahara in Bangalore to expand the jail premises and also set up a high security prision.

The government had already earmarked Rs 17 crore for the land acquisition process, he said.

A special court for trial of high security prisioners will be housed in the new wing of Parapana Agrahara, Katti said.
