Parties begin to rack brains over by-poll

Y S V Datta to contest as JD(S) candidate from Kadur

Though all three parties are holding series of meetings on finalising candidates, none is ready to disclose the names. These parties are waiting for their rivals to announce their candidates so that they can field a suitable person, depending on various permutation and combinations.

The last date for filing nominations for the by-election is August 25. The polling is scheduled for September 13. However, the JD(S) spokesperson and MLC Y S V Datta will file the nomination from Kadur on Monday. The bypolls have been necessitated following the death of Chandrashekar Patil Revoor of the BJP (Gulbarga South) and K M Krishnamurthy of Congress (Kadur).

Though the BJP, which held its office bearers meeting on Sunday at a private resort, discussed about its strategies for the by-elections, it did not finalise names of its candidates. “There are several aspirants. We will finalise our candidates at an appropriate time,” BJP State President K S Eshwarappa said.

JD(S) chief H D Deve Gowda and his son - former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy also held a meeting on the byelections. The Congress too is playing the cards close to the chest and waiting for the BJP to announce its candidates, sources said.

The BJP is likely to field three-time MLC Sushil Namoshi from Gulbarga South and Dr Vishwanath, who unsuccessfully contested in 2008 assembly polls, from Kadur. The Congress is planning to field Kempa Raju, late Krishnamurthy’s brother, from Kadur.
