The handset market in India, which was once dominated by global firms Nokia, Samsung and LG, has seen homegrown brands such as Micromax, Spice, Karbonn and Zen make their mark in recent times with feature-rich phones at dirt-cheap prices. As many as nine to ten million new devices are sold every month in the country.

Swissvoice India, a part of the Switzerland-based Swissvoice group, plans to sell about thirty thousand handsets every month in the country. "Initially, we will target the youth segment in the tier II and III cities in northern India. From next month, we will launch the handsets in southern states," Swissvoice India Director Dollar Gulati told reporters here. Starting with five handsets, the company wants to have 10-12 of its handsets available in the country by the end of this year.

"We will be manufacturing the products out of China. However, the initial research and development will be done in our centre in Hong Kong," he added.
