Bharatanatyam

A Bharatanatyam recital by Jyotsna Jagannathan, a disciple of A Lakshman, Nrithyalakshana, Chennai will be held at Seva Sadan, Malleswaram on August 26 at 7 pm. Based in the City, Jyotsna is an empanelled artiste with the ICCR, and a graded artiste of Doordarshan.  

Odissi recitals

Odissi lovers in the City will get a chance to savour the best of Odissi delights on August 29, 5.30 pm at Seva Sadan, Malleswaram.

Nrityantar will present its festival of Odissi dance Naman 2010, which will feature young artistes Pankaj Kumar Pradhan and Amulya Balabantaray from Bhubaneswar with  Sangeeta Dash from Pondicherry and Sharmila Mukherjee.

The Odissi duo Uday and Soumya Shetty will also perform.  Apart from these performances, this festival will feature an exhibition of rare photographs demonstrating the history of Odissi. 

Aditha Prakash, a disciple of  M R Krishnamurthy of ‘Kalakshithi’, will be presenting her ‘Bharatanatyam Rangapravesha’ on August 29, 6 pm at Ravindra  Kalakshetra, J C Road. Aditha has  rendered several performances under the ‘Kalakshiti’ banner.

‘Nritya Dhaare 8’

Ananya is organising Nritya Dhaare 8 on August 27, 6 pm onwards at Seva Sadan, 14th Cross, Malleswaram. On the occasion, there will be a Bharatanatyam recital by Namitha Desai, Mohiniyattam by Swapna Rajendrakumar and a Kuchupudi performance by Archana Punyesh.

‘Sai Nrityotsava’

ApoorvaSai Nrityotsava 16 will be held on September 1, 5.30 pm at Seva Sadan, Malleswaram. On the occasion, a kathak recital will be presented by the disciples of Chitra Venugopal while Articulate and SAI will present the dance-drama Bilva, choreographed by Kavya Shree N.
There will also be Bharatanatyam recitals by Raghunandan, Aparajita Sarma, Meghna Venkat and Odissi by Manasi Pandya.

‘Rangapravesha’

Rasika Academy of Performing Arts will present the Bharatanatyam Rangapravesha of Apoorva C, disciple of Kiran Subramanyam and Sandhya Kiran on August 28, 6.30 pm at ADA Rangamandira, J C Road. 

MUSIC

Flute treat

Ananya is organising a flute recital by N Rajkamal on August 28, 6 pm at Ananya Sabhangana, 4th Main, Malleswaram. H K Venkatram will play the violin.

Arjunkumar will play the mridanga and on the ghata will be M A Krishnamurthy. There will also be a violin recital on August 29, 4 pm at the same venue by Aishwarya Venkataraman. 

On mridangam will be Vellore Ramabhadran and on khanjira will be Vinod Venkataraman.
A vocal recital by P P Ramakrishnan will be presented on August 29, 6.30 pm, also at Ananya Sabhangana.   

Endowment concert

Sri Rama Lalitha Kala Mandira is holding an endowment concert of R P Indira Devi on August 29, 5.30 p.m. On the occasion, a Carnatic vocal music concert by Sangeetha Kala Ratna Neela Ramgopal will be held. R K Shriramkumar will be on violin, Patri Satishkumar on mridanga and S Kartik on ghatam. The venue is Rama Lalitha Kala Mandira Concert Hall.

‘Utsav 2010’

Unnati is hosting Utsav 2010, a fund-raising concert on the occasion of Gokulashtami. This three-week festival will be held till September 6 at the Unnati Centre in Kasturinagar, near NGEF. 

On August 26, 6 pm, Sikkil C Gurucharan, H K Venkatram, Umayalpuram Sivaraman and E M Subramanyam will perform.

On August 27, 6 pm, Sudha Raghunathan, Embar S Kanan, Neyveli Skandasubramaniyam and S N Narayana Murthy will perform. For details, call 25301284 or 25567990.

For vocalists

World Music Center is introducing professional Carnatic music courses for budding vocalists.

The course includes training for vocalists by Padmabhushan Trichur V Ramachandran and Kalaimamani Charumathi Ramachandran who will be at the World Music Center, # 42/1, East Park Road, Between 17th and 18th Cross, Malleswaram for four days in a month.

Carnatic strains

Music Circle Chandra Layout is holding a Carnatic music concert by Priyanka C Prakash, disciple of Sangeeta Kalaratna Vidushi Neela Ramgopal, on August 28, 6 pm at No 12, Basaveshwara HBCS, 7th cross, 2nd Main, Chandra Layout.

She will be accompanied by Anand Vishwanathan on the violin and Adamya on the mridangam.

Jazz trio

BFlat is featuring one of America’s top contemporary jazz trios in concert on August 28 at 8.30 pm.

Alex Machacek (guitar) plays with Jeff Sipe (drums) and Neal Fountain (bass guitar).  They are on a four-city tour and this will be an exclusive concert in the City.

Live show

Bangalore band K.A.R.T will perform live at the Hard Rock Café on August 26, 8.45 pm. The band comprises  Sherin Jacob (vocals / percussion), Bryan Richard (bass / vocals), Jason Zachariah (keys / vocals), Wilfred Demoz (drums) and Naveen Thomas Joseph (guitars).

Different strains

Smriti Nandan is conducting the Devnandan Ubhayakar Yuva Sangeet Utsav at the Chowdiah Hall on August 28, 6 pm and on August 29, at 10 am and 6 pm.

On August 28, the festival will begin with the performance of Ruchira Kale (vocal).
This will be followed by a sarangi recital by Sarwar Hussain. On August 29, Omkar Hawaldar will perform in the morning. After which there will be a sitar recital by Hindol Deb. 

The evening will see the performance of Dhrupad singer Sanchita Chowdhury and the finale is a sarod recital by Arunabha Deb.

‘Samarasa Samvadini’

Bijapure Harmonium Foundation presents a unique music event called Samarasa Samvadini, featuring piano, harmonium, accordion and leg harmonium, exploring different genres of world music — Hindustani, Carnatic, Western, European folk and Indian theatre music.

The event will be held at Chowadiah Memorial Hall on August 27, 5.45 pm.

Tasveer and Bernard J Shapero Rare Books, in association with Ganjam, presents One Hundred Vintage Views of India at Tasveer Gallery, Sua House, 26/1, Kasturba Cross Road till August 28.

The exhibition aims to introduce the subject of 19th century photography to potential collectors and institutions in India.  The timings are 10 am to 7 pm. The exhibition will be closed on Sundays.

‘Dakshin’

Kynkyny Art will present an interesting show, Dakshin, celebrating art from Tamil Nadu.
Three talented and distinctive artists from the region — Santhana Krishnan, Sivabalan and Elayaraja — use mixed media works and paintings to create a vivid tapestry of the life, times and culture of the deep South.

The art works by the Chennai-based troika, which will be on view till September 7, tell a compelling story — of fading traditions and still-carefully-preserved ways of life that stand on precarious ground in post-modern times.
