They make best use of Ramzan

This is also the time when beedi-rolling women of the city rake extra moolah. Thousands of women in Noor Nagar, Rahmat Nagar, Millat Nagar, Beedi Colony, Nisar Nagar, Shahenshah Nagar and Phoolshah Mollah are involved in the beedi rolling.

Incidently, the women who are the major workforce in beedi rolling are lent loans by beedi vendors for celebration of the festival. During this period, a woman who normally rolls 4,000 to 5,000 during a week, rolls 7,000 to 8,000 beedis, doubling the income.
The loan availed during the beginning of the month is returned by the end of the month. Availing the loan to celebrate the festival and repaying the same is the purpose of working extra hours.

This is the month of extreme hard work. However, care is taken not to break rituals observed strictly as per the texts of Quran. Heavy celebration and heavy work is the motto of these workers, said the Kolar Beedi Workers Welfare Association’s president Najibunissa.
Further, during Ramzan there is change in timings in Muslim schools and children come home early. They too help their parents, she added.

The daily routine of the Muslims during Ramzan is as follows. They get up at 3.45 am. From 3.45 to 4.45 am is the Sehari, when food is consumed. Prayers are offered till 5.45 am.
In the afternoon, prayers are offered from 1 pm to 2 pm while in the evening, they are between 5.00  and 5.30, and  6.30 pm to 6.45 pm.
The prayers for long duration are held after 8.00 pm. Food is consumed after 6.45 pm in what is popularly known as Iftiyar.
Work is soon resumed after prayers. Sometimes women continue work till midnight.
Apart from beedi rolling, the women also engage in incense stick rolling to earn money.
