India to import 2000 tonnes of silk from China: Maran

Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, Maran said the weavers in Benares and Kanchipuram have been complaining of shortage of high quality sik for quite some time.

"We are importing 2000 tonnes of high quality silk from China which will be provided to weavers in Kanchipuram and Benares," he said.

The discussion on the question took an interesting turn when Anu Tandon (Cong) sought to raise the plight of weavers who produce the famed Benares silk sarees.

"But you are never seen wearing a saree," a member said as Tandon, a member from Unnao in Uttar Pradesh, sought to make a point forcefully.

The government has imposed anti-dumping duty on silk to protect the domestic industry, Maran said adding that he would like to see the member wearing a Benares silk saree the next time she walks in Parliament.

Speaker Meira Kumar wound up the discussion on the question by making a suggestion to Maran that perhaps he would like to gift a Benares silk saree to Tandon, a first time member.
