Karnataka takes steps to curb illegal liquor transport

"Illegal liquor from Goa continues to be transported into Karnataka, prompting the government to strengthen its squad. Also, people from Karnataka go to Goa to drink and purchase liquor as it costs less in that state," Minister for Excise M P Renukacharya told reporters here.

A letter has been sent to Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa for his nod to recruit 60 security personnel to augment staff for the mobile squad at Karwar, he said.

Directing excise officials to take steps to eradicate hooch production in Kolar, Belgaum, Chamarajanagar, Karwar and Bangalore districts, the minister warned, "In case of any hooch tragedy, top level officials will have to pay a price for it.
