QI am a 21-year-old girl. I weigh  43 kg and my height is 5 feet 3 inches. I am very skinny. I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner on time and but do not exercise at all. Please suggest a diet plan so that I can gain some weight.

A It is important to understand the components of body weight before you embark on your weight gain programme. Body weight is made of four different parts — muscle, bone, fluids and fat. The part that needs to be toned is the muscle. Exercise is very important. I would advise you to step your weight up by 8 kg only. It is good that you’re eating your meals on time. Incorporate the following into your diet: a bowl of sprouts (green gram or moong), a bowl of curd, 2 thin slices of cheese, a bowl of dal/ rajma, 5 almonds/cashew nuts, an egg,  fish or lean chicken.  Start your day with a brisk 30-minute walk. Slowly step it up to a slow jog and then, a run. Swimming is a good workout for building muscle. You can also start resistance training, either with a fitstrip (a wide elastic band) or dumb bells.

QI am 21 years old and I have acne scars on my face. Please suggest some remedies.


AAvoid picking or squeezing your pimples. There are two kinds of laser treatment for acne-scar removal — Erbium and YAG laser. The laser penetrates the skin and the moisture in the skin readily absorbs it. The heat produced is scattered, leaving normal skin unaffected. Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser emits short bursts of laser light that vapourises scarred skin tissue, a layer at a time, leaving behind new skin. Medical complications after laser surgery on acne scars are rare. However, consult a dermatologist and a cosmetologist before you decide to undergo laser therapy.
