The students, majority of whom were allotted civil engineering seats in PES Institute of Technology, have been left in the lurch after AICTE declared certain seats in the college as excess intake.

Despite scoring top ranks, they have been waiting for weeks to get seats of their choice as KEA was yet to take a decision on the reallotment of seats.

As per the suggestion of a senior KEA administrative official, the students, along with their parents, had assembled at the KEA hoping the officials would have arrived at a solution to resolve the crisis.

After a couple of rounds of talks with the parents, the officials declared that the government had decided to allot mechanical engineering seats in BMS College of Engineering. “This is the decision of the government. It is up to you to decide whether to accept or not,” a senior KEA official said.

Seats denied

Irked by this, many students, especially girls, told the officials that they cannot be forced to study mechanical engineering. When officials did not budge, the parents pleaded with them to give them an opportunity to pick seats before the casual vacancy round begins on September 1 as their children were denied seats in the admission round.

The KEA officials then raised their voice declaring that they had done the maximum to help the students though the AICTE was to be blamed for the mess. This led to a heated exchange of words between the parents and officials. Though the parents requested the KEA to block the seats before the casual vacancy round, the administrative officials said they cannot do it. Meanwhile, KEA also sent an SMS to students saying they would have to pick their seats before 4 pm. A few boys opted for mechanical course, while the girls were in no mood to take the seat.

However, instead of pacifying the agitated parents and the students, the officials informed that students can pick their choice of seats during the casual round.
But parents argued that in casual rounds students will be getting the leftover seats though they fall within the 5,000 rank. They were also apprehensive whether the seats allotted in BMS would fall in the KEA matrix.
