Oceanic crowd witness 'Vittla Pindi' in Udupi

The 13-day celebrations of ‘Krishna Jayanti’ and ‘Krishna Leelothsava’ organised by Paryaya Shiroor math was a feat for eyes, literally, bringing a slice of Lord Krishna’s birth in the city.

‘Bhajans’ and ‘hymns’ of Lord Krishna echoed in every nook and corner of Car Street. Devotees gathered in large number to get the ‘darshan’ of Lord Krishna who was adorned with ‘Vajra Kavacha Alankara’ today.

‘Arghya Pradhana’ was performed last night at 11.54 pm by Paryaya Shiroor math pontiff Sri Laxmivaratheertha Sripada. International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) devotees were part of celebrations.

‘Anna santharpane’ (mass feeding) was held on the occasion. Paryaya Shiroor Math prepared about one lakh ‘Chakkuli’ and 2 lakh ‘laddoos’ to distribute to the devotees.

Various rituals besides routine poojas were held throughout the day. The clay idol of ‘Balakrishna’ was mounted on the golden chariot and was brought in an elaborate and grand procession at 3 pm. The procession was led by ‘huli vesha’ (tiger dance) and other cultural tableaux.‘Mahamangalarati’ was performed to clay idol of the Lord by the pontiffs of ‘Astamatha’ on the occasion. Seers threw coconuts, fruits, eatables like laddoos and coins as ‘Prasadam’ at the huge crowd assembled at Car Street to witness the events.

The major attraction of the event in the evening was ‘Mosaru kudike’. Devotees dressed as shepherds and also from shepherd community wearing husk dress broke the earthen pots filled with milk products and color water with bamboo sticks erected at 15 different places around Car Street.

‘Navarathnakanaka ratha’ was also taken out on the occasion. The clay idol of Lord was later immersed in ‘Madhwa Sarovar’. The seers and devotees took holy dip at ‘Madhwa Sarovar’. Cultural programmes like folk dance, ‘marakalu spardhe,’ ‘adike mara yeruva spardhe’ and other competitions were organised throughout the day. Spiritual discourse by Admaru math seer was held.
