But, with pourakarmikas threatening to launch stir just around Dasara, trouble seems to be brewing for the minister even before he realised the expanse of his words.

Pourakarmikas have decided to boycot cleaning works in the city coinciding with the inauguration of the nine-day festival.

This was announced to the media here on Thursday by former Mayor Narayan under the banner of Mysore Nagarapalike Pourakarmikara Sangha.

The pourakarmikas who had launched an indefinite strike on May 31, had withdrawn their struggle on June 1.

They had submitted a nine point memorandum to the district administration, urging them for the fulfilment of their demands. Narayan said among the total demands, the authorities initiated measures to release special grant of Rs 1,500 for pourakarmikas on rolls on Ambedkar Jayanthi.

The remaining demands like recommending for filling the vacant posts of pourakarmikas through direct recruitment, extending of equal pay for equal job on the lines of Gulbarga City Corporation, PF and ESI benefits for pourkarmikas recruited on contract basis according to the new tender, considering pourakarmikas working on contract basis in UGD section as ‘skilled labour’, extending of facilities on the lines of government employees in case of death to all the local bodies, shelter for homeless pourakarmikas, extending of Yashaswini or similar health insurance scheme and free edcation up to degree level for their children, have remained unaddressed.

Following a query, Narayan said that the district in-charge Minister Suresh Kumar too had promised to consider the demands during a meeting held in Bangalore on June 4.

Narayan issued a deadline till the end of September for the authorities to consider the demand. If they fail to address, hunger strike will be launched on October 1.

Even then, if the authorities fail to act, the pourakarmikas will stop cleaning works from October 8, the day when the nine-day Dasara festival will be launched.
