Niranjan, Manasa emerge champs

Belgaum lad Niranjan, who opted Catalan System with white pieces, defeated Kedar Vaze of Shimoga in the seventh round to pocket the title at the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan. Niranjan along with Kedar scored six points each but the former secured victory courtesy of a tie-breaker.

In the girls’ section, Manasa of Mangalore overcame team-mate Eulalia Pereira in 45 moves to emerge champion. Manasa maintained an all-win record all championship, tallying five points in as many rounds.

Top four players in the boys and girls’ sections will represent Karnataka in the National Junior championship to be held in Puri, Orissa, from September 30 to October 9.
