CM to take a call on RGUHS controversy

Last Updated 14 September 2010, 16:31 IST

Sources said the expert committee is submitting the report after inspecting medical colleges - Rajarajeshwari Institute of Medical Sciences, Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) and Bangalore Medical College - which were given permission to increase their intake by the RGUHS vice-chancellor.

Several Syndicate members of the health varsity have repeatedly criticised the vice-chancellor for increasing the intake of a few medical colleges and appointment of the new registrar. The Syndicate also met the Governor to complain about the irregularities in the health varsity.  According to the Syndicate members, the vice-chacellor has approved the increase in the intake of the Rajarajeshwari Institute of Medical Sciences, KIMS and Bangalore Medical College by allegedly flouting various norms such as forming an inspection committee without informing the Syndicate.

A separate panel of experts constituted by the Department of Medical Education has already visited KIMS and Raja Rajeshwari Institute of Medical Sciences to inspect infrastructure as well as other facilities of learning.

A senior member of the RGUHS Syndicate expressed his happiness about the Government's intervention. "The Chief Minister had sent two letters to the medical education secretary's office regarding the issue. The Government interference might bring much-needed transparency in the conduct of the varsity," said a senior member of the varsity.

The Syndicate also highlighted the need to find an urgent solution to the issue as several postgraduate examinations are coming up.

"The new registrar does not have enough experience in conducting examinations. The Government should try to provide a solution before the exam season starts," said a senior Syndicate member.
