As many as 3 doctors out of 10 have already reported to duty while the remaining 7 doctors still have 15 days time to report to duty. The total number of posts lying vacant in the district is 33.

The newly appointed medicos will be deputed at Kannangala, Suntikoppa, Hudikeri, Alur Siddapura, Bhagamandala, Cherambane, Srimangala Primary Health Centres, Palibetta Community Health Centre and Kallahalla Mobile Health Unit. Only Hudigere Primary Health Centre has been given two doctors.

Dr Rakesh Uthappa will be appointed at Kannangala, Dr B V Sathish Kumar to Suntikoppa, Dr Ruksana and Dr Ramesh Kumar to Hudikeri, Dr H L Srinivas and Dr Srinivas to Siddapura, Dr B N Manjunath to Palibetta, Dr G C Gopalraj to Bhagamandala, Dr A J Chandrashekar to Cherambane, Dr K N Ramya to Srimangala and Dr Dr M P Nalin Kumar to Kallahalla. Vacancy for two doctors at Napoklu Primary Health Centre has not yet been filled. It may be recalled that people had staged a protest recently demanding appointment of doctors to this PHC.

Glitches

Though government and the district administration had tried to fill the posts in the past the problem was with the attitude of the medicos who did not want to work in the region. Every time interviews were conducted and candidates were finalised, there was reluctance on the part of the candidates to report to duty. The doctors were seen taking transfer to other places within few days of appointment. The hilly terrain of the region, lack of opportunity to work in private nursing homes, low salary package are the main reason behind medicos turning their backs to Government posting.

Though the Government had announced that rural appointment will be a must for medical pass outs, it was not followed strictly. Hence shortage of doctors in rural area still remains to be a serious problem.

However, with the appointment of 10 doctors, the people living in rural areas can heave a sigh of relief. With this what is remaining is appointment of specialists to 16 vacancies in various Community Health Centres in the district.
