The land that was once upon a time at the rage for foul smell and heaps of garbage is now being altered absolutely for a new look. Beedinagudde dumping yard will get a facelift soon much to the relief of the residents of Udupi.

The four acres of land will accommodate a playground, an open air theatre and a joggers’ park. The estimated cost of the open air theatre is Rs 2.5 crore.

Speaking to City Herald, CMC Commissioner Gokuldass Nayak said that the project has been prepared and is awaiting technical approval. The work will begin once the approval is received. The entire project needs six months to one year period to get completed, he added.

The city has two grounds, one at Ajjarakadu and the other at Adi Udupi. The stadium at Ajjarakadu is limited to track and field events, while the ground at Adi Udupi is under Indian Navy. Public gathering or the use of ground for any public purpose is prohibited. In this backdrop , the city was in need of a full fledged cricket ground and also a ground that can accommodate people at a public gathering.

The four acre land at Beedinagudde was earlier a dumping yard. But it has been cleared after the dumping yard was shifted to Karwalu near Alevoor. However, the area will be further cleaned. After excavation, the foundation for the new structures will be laid. “The cleaning process takes longer time as the area was a dumping yard for several years, informed Nayak.

Meanwhile, Udupi city also lacks a full fledged open air theatre. The open air theatre will add a colour to the ongoing cultural activities in and around Udupi. It is being envisioned as a cultural centre to accommodate cultural activities in large scale. There are many theatre groups who stage theatre plays occasionally. However, with the setting up of an open air theatre in Udupi, these groups will get an opportunity to display the shows quite often. The open air theatre will be equipped with green rooms, leg rooms and a foyer enabling live performances. The seating capacity of the theatre is yet to be decided.
Plans are on to set up a audio-visual projector in the theatre in coming days. Proposal aiding the beautification of the surrounding areas in Beedinagudde by laying gardens adjacent to the play ground and open air theatre is undergoing rapid planning process.
All works concerning the beautification works of previous dumping yard will be executed simultaneously.
