Governor, Chief Minister mourn the maestro

The Governor in his condolence message said the State had lost a doyen of Hindustani music and exponent of Gwalior Gharana. Recalling the contribution of Gavai, Governor said he taught music to thousands of his followers, many of whom were visually impaired.

Expressing sorrow at the demise of Gavai, Yeddyurappa said hundreds of blind children had lost their mentor. His contribution in the fields of education, music and literature had been exemplary. The State government had plans to honour him with Karnataka Ratna title next year. But the destiny did not allow that to happen.

The final rites of Gavai would be performed with State honour. District administration of Gadag had declared holiday on Saturday to make it convenient for the people get the last glimpses of the departed, he said. Many ministers, leaders of opposition have also mourned his death.
